Quick Guide: Writing Legal Articles (Part I)

A great legal article has certain benefits. It can increase your firm’s brand value and visibility. Also, it could be helpful to many people who are in need of some specific information. It may help researchers, other lawyers or a reporter to understand the state of the law.

 

Lawyers get a lot of articles and blogs to write on best Indian social networking sites.  Sometimes a lawyer has to summarise a case, explain a legal term or some other useful information to the clients.

 

Usually, these blogs and articles need lengthy research, understanding a whole case, making a draft and then submitting for publication. The process might differ but one thing remains common. Legal writing costs lots of money.

 

In this 2 part series we will be exploring the effective ways of writing a legal article. Part I today, will be dealing with the basics of the writing process, while Part II will focus in detail, on the technicalities.

 

So, without further adieu, here’s a quick guide om How to Write Legal Articles –

 

  1. Target Audience –

 

  • Decide the readers of your legal article. Who will read it? Is it going to be beneficial? Will they search for this topic on the best Indian social networking sites? How can you simplify the language? The more detailed, the better.

 

  • Once you accept the reality that you are writing to someone, rather than AT someone, a lot of the issues facing many legal articles will immediately dissolve out of your writing.

 

 

  1. Headline –

 

  • The headline should be catchy and should tell the readers why they should care about your article. For instance; ‘’Mistakes to Avoid in a Law Career’’ or Why Delhi’s Lawers are Crazy About SBK Law Diary?’’

 

  • They need to be immediately meaningful – if a person can’t figure out what it’s about, then she or he probably is not going to click on it.

 

 

  1. Article Summary/Extract –

 

  • The extract lets a person who has been grabbed by your headline – get to know a little more about the whole thing.
  • It needs to be short – explanatory and pitchy.
  • Usually, the writers simply copy-paste the first few sentences of the article. This is LAZY. Good use of extracts can include:
  • posing a question;
  • making a statement;
  • giving a benefit.

 

 

  1. Relevant Images –

 

 

  • Another ‘laziness’ shown by legal writers is that they do not bother to take out 5 minutes of their time to upload an image.
  • It’s not going to capture the attention of the fast scrolling reader on social media
  • Always find a relevant stock image for your post or get your marketing team to get one.

 

 

  1. Writing Style –

 

  • Keep sentences and paragraphs short. Break up your text with headings, images or extracted quotes
  • larger fonts are better than smaller ones
  • The tone of the paragraphs must be appropriate to the audience. Avoid jargon – it will unnecessarily complicate things and break the flow of your article.
  • However, the best part is perhaps that you learn to think systematically and strategically when you write article after article. It is a fantastic exercise for a lawyer to write about practical legal problems continuously. It keeps your knowledge sharpened, arguments ready and reputation strong.
