With the advent of the internet, music has truly become a language that everyone can understand. Especially, in a country like India which officially has 22 scheduled languages and unofficially more than 700 languages, the range of regional music can be truly phenomenal.
Surely, the more commercial Bombay cinema with its Hindi songs and presence of social networking sites India tends to overshadow them, but the regional music with all their flaws and budget constraints and songs of the country are equally essential and a reflection of India’s homogenous cultural identity.
So here’s a collection of 5 regional music stars (veteran and upcoming) who have done wonders for different parts of the nation they represent:
- Name: AR Rahman –
Language: Tamil and Malayalam
Let’s begin with the legend AR Rahman himself who hardly needs any introduction. While his music in the movie Slumdog Millionaire (2008) earned him an Oscar and several of his works have got him awards for Hindi films, his Malayalam and Tamil cinema contributions cannot be overlooked. With training in Western Classical music, the ‘Mozart of Madras’ (his nickname) uses a wide range of instruments from Guitar, Cello, Flute, Keyboard to traditional instruments such as Shehnai, Sitar and Tabla.
His debut Tamil film Roja (1992) as music director gave him huge recognition for the song Puthu vellai mazhai. Having a great start, he went on to give gems in Malayalam language too with songs like Kune Kune (Yodha, 1992 ) and Jillam Padam (Paarthale Parasavam, 2001)
- Name: Devi Sri Prasad –
This songwriter, composer and singer from the Telugu film industry has made much name for himself in a short amount of time. A winner of eight Filmfare awards, Devi Sri Prasad debuted as a composer in 1999 with the film, Devi, and gained popularity with Telugu films such as Varsham (2004), Srimanthudu (2015). His rising star has made him extremely popular in Bollywood where several of his works have been re-made in Hindi and given chartbusters à la Dhinka Chika song from the 2011 Hindi film Ready starring Salman Khan.
- Name: Diljit Dosanjh –
Hailing from Punjab, this iconic Punjabi munda had very humble beginnings. A singer of Sikh devotional music in local Gurudwaras (Sikh temple) during his school days, Diljit Dosanjh has today become one of the most celebrated Punjabi actor and singer in with soaring album sales on online music sites. Although his debut album Ishq Da Uda Ada didn’t do much for him, it was only later in the year 2005 that his music album Smile soared in popularity with Punjabi songs like Nachh Diyan Alran Kuwariyan and Paggan Pochviyan Wale. Already popular in the UK by winning the BritAsia TV Music Award in 2013, Dosanjh is now a familiar face in Bollywood for films like Udta Punjab (2016) and Phillauri (2017)
- Name: Falguni Pathak
The land of Garba and Navratri music has given beautiful mp3 songs and wonderful artists who are famous worldwide and are very often invited by the NRI community to perform in different countries. Atul Purohit, Preeti Pinky, Aadesh Shrivastav are some famous names here. However, one cannot simply forget the name of Falguni Pathak and her contributions to this genre. Her songs such as Maine payal hai chhankayi, Churi jo khanki haath ma, Meri chunar udd udd jaye are extremely popular even today. Her Dandiya songs include her cover songs such as; Kesariyo Rang Tane Lagyo, Amu Kaka Bapa Na can be heard during the Garba.
- Name: Manoj Tiwari –
Bhojpuri music has been home to several popular singers such as Udit Narayan and Shreya Ghoshal, however, the immense contributions of Manoj Tiwari deserve a special mention in this list. Now an active politician, Manoj Tiwari has been the undisputed king of Bhojpuri songs with the experience of working in nearly 50 Bhojpuri films. He has given several hit tracks over the past decade such as ‘’Aaj Chhodab Nahi Goriya’’, Chat Deni Mar Deli, Didiya Aeheeje Baadi
